Tag Any File — Not Just Your Markdown Notes

The NoteVault Team · April 9, 2026 · 2 min read · No comments yet

Four different file-type icons each with a tag attached, all connecting down into one shared tag-cloud panel.

Plenty of note apps let you tag a note. Fewer let you tag the PDF sitting right next to it, or the screenshot, or the spreadsheet — because their tagging system was built around one file format and everything else is a second-class citizen. NoteVault's tags don't care what kind of file they're attached to.

One tag system, every file

Whether it's a markdown note, a Word document, an image, or a binary file NoteVault can't even preview, the same tag editor applies to it, and the same tag index tracks it. A project's files get walked and indexed so tag filtering works instantly, without re-scanning the folder every time you open the filter panel.

Filter a whole project down to what matters

Tag a batch of files as "client-approved" or "needs-review" or "reference," and the tag filter panel narrows the entire project down to just those, regardless of what format each one happens to be. It's a second way of organizing a project that sits on top of — not instead of — whatever folder structure you already have.

For a vault that's meant to hold everything a project touches, not just the notes about it, that consistency is the actual point: one system, not one for markdown and an inconsistent afterthought for everything else.
